Variety of Roller Thrust Bearing and Its Use in Machines

In the world of machines, there are many subjects to learn about. Some knowledge can be theoretically gained while some other information would be imparted through experience with handling the machinery. People, especially the direct labor force, who work in the respective industries would be proficient in such minute details like that of what a bearing is and what its variations would be.

Roller Thrust Bearing

Like any other bearing, a roller bearing is also a classification of the same which are designed in such a way in order to permit the linking parts to rotate smoothly. The use of the bearing is for this main reason along the lines of reducing the frictional possibilities to a great extent. Friction here would be referred to the one arising out of the two rotating parts connected to the bearing.

Types of Thrust Roller Bearing
Just like a bearing can be classified majorly into two- ball bearings and roller bearings, there are further categorizations available for these two types of bearings as well. A thrust roller bearing is one such category of a roller bearing. Any bearing which is of the thrust type can be called as a thrust bearing. Hence, any roller bearing of the thrust nature is termed as a thrust roller bearing.

Such a bearing is usually designed in such a way that the rolling elements placed within it would be encaged in the structure of the bearing. This is mainly because these bearings are suitable for higher loads and to support loads only axially. The encaged form of the rollers brings up higher axial rigidity through the use of these bearings.

These bearings are again classified into four types- cylindrical roller thrust bearings, needle thrust roller bearings, tapered roller thrust bearings and spherical thrust roller bearings. All of these kinds support higher axial loads. Most of these are used in applications that would be requiring high speed operations. At the same time, they also do the function of permitting rotation between the two parts they are connected to within the machine.

A Spherical Roller Thrust Bearing design
The basic purpose of all the types of bearings are generally the same- to permit rotation for the parts connected to the bearing with lesser friction. However, the design of each type of roller thrust bearing would be different which in fact determines the use of the same in a type of machinery. A spherical roller thrust bearing is one of those kinds of bearings which can perform the aforesaid basic role as well as permit misalignment possibilities in an angular way. It has a self-aligning nature and can bear heavy axial load but in moderate speed only.
